I also do a lot with minor dirt work, augers, fencing, etc. I’d call my skid steer needs: >50% forestry. Do too many other things to need a dedicated machine. Will run Vail mulcher which is amazing. Using a any CTL to drive a mulching head is a comprise and will never be as productive a dedicated tractor. A PT100 is not the best CTL for the job according to people on other forums, It still has some floors dating back to the RC100 and Terex don't give a rats arse about their costumers after the sale has been made apparently.

Guys-I have a new Cat 299D2 XHP I bought for mulching. I am looking at heads and would like some input. I have a larger forestry machine with a Fecon head (which is admittedly older) and have done a demo with an FAE head. Fecon is going to bring me a skid steer head to demo. I was planning to go. I would use several FECON dedicated mulcher carrier machines. They aren't cheap so renting/leasing them for the duration of the job will probably be your best bet. A skid will get the job done, but the FECON built machine with carrier is more efficient. I've used a FECON mounted on a T300 and it was a good system. There is a lot of mulching going on here for fire protection. Those big stand alone tracked mulching machines look like expensive money pits. Those full width skid steer mounted ones look like they would be hard on the machine. The mulchers on excavators seem like the way to go as long as the head is sized for the flow and cooling capacity .
I have been in the mulching game for over 12 years and it's one of the hardest jobs I have ever done and at times the most rewarding. But Boy Oh Boy some days you wonder why you got outa bed. Ive smashed bearings and bearing housings, bent rotors (2), had hydraulic pump fail at less than 1900 hours. the < 74hp machines with radial lift are the lowest incidence of warranty claims we see in the shop among the skid steers and CTLs. make sure the machine your buying has high flow or enhanced high flow hydraulics, and you'll want a cab for any kind of brush cutter / forestry mulcher applications. I was told by my buddy that runs an RC100 with the forestry package and fecon mulcher that ASV just released an exclusive new mulching head in conjunction with Fecon. It has a 110cc two speed drive motor (his normal fecon drive motor is 67cc), 45 tools vs 30 on his head, the head has been "pulled" back towards the machine 6" for better balance .
