O.K. guys, how many of you use a skid steer such as a Bobcat to load your logs onto the mill and lumber onto the truck? Is a skidsteer a good choice or is the conventional forklift better? I'm looking for all feedback so don't be shy.
Manufactures are making the newer skid steers more forestry friendly. They have reversible fans on radiators more guards and more underbelly plates. Unless you are never going to take the thing off of a cement pad, I would go with a skid steer. I use mine all the time to lift 2500 lbs with the pallet forks. A skid steer can go anywhere, and you can buy all kinds of toys for it for other uses. A fork lift only has one use.
A wheel loader is the best for heighth, but the skid steer has it all over the wheel loader (CAT 910 in my case) for speed. I put 5' forks on my skid steer or CTL (Compact Track Loader) and it will walk all over in deep mud with a full load of hardwood logs. Skid Steer vs Tractor in Sawmills and Milling
I can lift a little better than 3000lbs on my loader, and have much better visibility out of my cab vs the skid steer. The skidder winch is no replacement for a TJ, but it works well. My opinion, if a guy is going to have one machine in the yard, its a 4wd tractor all the way. What size skid steer/which brand & size of forestry head should I look at? Is there a better option? I don't think hiring a dozer to push it all up and burn it is an option as there are so many small, scattered stands.
