A question for you diggers out there. I can purchase a mini excavator for the same amount it would cost to buy a 3pt backhoe for my JD 4300. I am leaning towards the excavator. I don't want the extra maintenance of another piece of equipment but feel it . About 10 years ago my brother bought a Bobcat CTL, and bought a 9 ton excavator about 7 years ago. He kept his backhoe, but the CTL and excavator does 90% of his work, along with a Case 650 bulldozer-prepping new house sites, septic installations, basement excavation, etc. It depends on how big your mini excavator will be. I have a 6 ton mini ex, it's arm/bucket specs are slightly behind the Cat 416 (12.8klbs/7.2klbs vs 11.1klbs/5.6klbs). To be fair, the 416 weighs 11klbs more than the KX057. I'd rather have my excavator than a backhoe, although stronger (bigger) would be better, sometimes. Going to do general for hire backhoe work.
