OMC went bankrupt in 1986 and all manuals prior to then are no longer available. I have heard of people purchasing them used on websites such as ebay. Is there a part number or comparable replacement for these dampers as I would like to replace both since I am reworking the control linkages. The engine runs really well with the exception of a cracked manifold.

If your 440 has 2 steering levers (left & right) then it is clutch controlled with variable speed belt driven, exactly the same as a JD24. If your 440 has single lever T bar control it is hydrostatic drive and is same as a JD24A with exception of the engine. thanks to ssdoxie for the tip on the JD24 being the same as my older OMC 440!
